Improve Health & Wellbeing

Be Fit Food is designed to help you feel better through eating real food. Weight loss is just one benefit. Other benefits of eating well include improved mental health and gut health. This page, part of the Be Fit Food philosophy, sets out the benefits you can look forward to on the program.

Weight loss

Excessive food intake and low physical activity over a long period of time can cause weight to increase, and that includes fat mass. Excess body fat can affect physical health and wellbeing, and contribute to chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers.

Weight loss and improved diet quality can improve these health markers, and can also help to reduce the risk of developing metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

Improved diet quality

Regardless of how much you are eating, a diet that is not of good quality can still result in poor health. This is where Be Fit Food can help.

Be Fit Food meals are made from high quality, wholesome and fresh ingredients, including a wide variety of seasonal vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. Each meal contains a healthy source of protein and between 4 and 12 different vegetables for added fibre and prebiotics.

A wide range of whole grains is used across the meals, including quinoa, brown rice and wholemeal pasta. That is different to other rapid weight loss programs, which provide synthetic meal replacement shakes and powders.

Every meal is made to the same specification: approximately 250 calories, at least 20g of protein, under 20g of carbohydrates, and less than 120mg of sodium per 100g, with no added sugar, no artificial sweeteners and no preservatives. Meals are snap-frozen rather than shelf-stabilised.

The link between mental health and diet

The body's ability to digest and absorb nutrients plays a key role in overall health and wellbeing. The gut plays a big part in this, with its trillions of bacteria which produce and store energy and support the immune system.

A strong gut microbiome is a diverse one. If there is a disturbance in the balance of bacteria, the body can become more susceptible to disease. Stress, injury, illness and medication all have a role to play, and all affect the individual blend of bacteria in a person's microbiome.

Diet has a large impact on gut health in both the short and the long term, and gut bacteria change depending on the food consumed. Everyone has a different gut bacteria profile, but the key themes for a healthy gut are a diet low in processed sugar and high in fibre.

Be Fit Food meals are designed with gut health in mind, so they contain no added sugar and are high in fibre to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. Meals include a range of legumes, vegetables, wholegrains, yoghurt, dairy, fish, seeds and nuts, which may be beneficial in increasing microbial diversity and overall health.

Which program is best for me?

There are different ways that Be Fit Food can support you in your weight loss journey, so the amount of weight you will lose depends on your goals and which program you choose. The most popular program is a two-week program, and people lose an average of 5.89kg over the course of the two weeks. There are also options for people who want to lose weight more steadily, and for those who want to manage their weight. If you are not sure where to start, the quiz can help you select a program or meal bundle.

Be Fit Food runs six programs:

On Be 1000 and Be 1200, weight loss runs at around 0.5-1.5kg per week, for up to 12 weeks at a time.

Speak to a dietitian

You can also speak to one of the dietitians, who have a schedule of free, over-the-phone appointments that can be booked online, to help start you on your journey to feeling good again. They support people whether the goal is to lose 2kg or 20kg, and consultations take around 15 minutes.

That free 15-minute consultation is valued at $49, can be taken by video or by phone, and needs no referral. Bookings go through portal.coreplus.com.au/befitfood. Be Fit Food is an Australian service founded by doctors and dietitians, employs Accredited Practising Dietitians and is a registered NDIS meal provider. The team also offers a specialised clinical dietitian consultation, a diabetes educator consultation, and a monthly weight management subscription. Customer service is on 1300 263 257, Monday to Friday.
